FRIENDS & FAMILY

See recipe in save tab
This week has been a wonderful week (really two days) filled with friends and it gets better. With Halloween and my son's birthday right around the corner, we will have family and friends ALL week. We made banana bread yesterday from my mothers recipe!! I love family recipes simply because I can't see my mother very often so this brings her home for me. You should try something that brings the smell, feeling, or thought of family into your home today.

Tomorrow we will be dressing up as someone or something else.  I encourage everyone to dress up for the night. There is something about putting on a crown or a clown nose that is a stress reliever for me. Not having to be normal is always NICE:) Go out and enjoy friends and family this week.
RELIEVE THE STRESS!!!

Find Friends

I have always been a friendly person. I believe I make friends quickly and am a good friend to others.  I have realized in the last few months that friends are HUGE!!! I had some good friends where I had lived but the amount of friends that we do stuff with now has tripled. So my advice this week is to find a friend (new or old) and do something. Do it with the whole family, just the couple, or just a few of you for a get together!! Whatever it is just get out of the daily grind and enjoy some wonderful company. AND you don't have to plan something, just get out and do. So I leave you with this:

Pumpkin Pie Triumph

All is well that ends well, right?   Well here it is my First Pumpkin pie from a real pumpkin!!  All in all I will probably make my pie this was from now on. The process was fairly simple and painless. I did find out that you would probably want to cook your pumpkins the day or night before instead on right when your trying to get dinner going:) My mistake but everything worked well. I choose a recipe off Pinterest. http://pinterest.com/pin/257620041155933705/

It gives you all the instructions from raw pumpkin to pumpkin pie and even some variations. I had my boys help scrape the seeds which they loved.I used two mini and one small pumpkin for my pie.
After getting the pie in the oven I moved on to the topping (which is my favorite). I decided to try two kinds of whip topping and see which one was preferred.
From the store I bought Reddi wip made with real cream. For the homemade one I decided on a recipe from All Recipes  http://allrecipes.com/recipe/easy-whipped-cream/detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=whipped%20topping&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=Home%20Page .

So what was the ending verdict...... The pie was a hit and everyone, except for my littlest one, liked the homemade whip topping best. The only complaint was that it was a little blah in flavor and could have been sweeter. So next time, and there will be a next time, I will use maybe brown sugar or honey.
Let me know if you have a better recipe and I will try and compare. Thanks and Bon Appetite!!!!

Cooking Julie Child Style

“Until I discovered cooking, I was never really interested in anything.”
Julia Child

I have decided that the thought I start out the week with will reflect what my other posts will be about that week. As you can probably tell from the wonderful Julia Child quote I will be exploring cooking this week. I have never really been a good "from scratch" cook but have been inspired to do more of it for my families health(as well as for budgeting benefits).  This week I will cook my first pumpkin pie from REAL pumpkins and experiment with Chinese cabbage as well as Bok Choy, mainly because it came in the Bountiful Basket I had purchased.  Aside from the cooking aspect I am trying to find something that will help bring LIFE back into my life. The thought of finding something that could interest me almost makes me want to get up in the morning. And any day that I want to get out of bed is a miracle. I end with another Julia Child quote only to warn you I will probably burn something this week!!

“The only real stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking you've got to have a what-the-hell attitude.”

Go outside!

The best remedy for those who are afraid,
lonely or unhappy is to go outside,
somewhere where they can be quiet,
alone with the heavens, nature and God.
Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be
and that God wishes to see people happy,
amidst the simple beauty of nature.
I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles.

Totally Pink

OK, as I mentioned earlier we just bought a new house. The gentlemen that we bought the house from left a few things behind.  Not sure if you can see this well but the white piece of furniture with the sweaters on it is my DIY project.

My mother always taught me that if it was sturdy it was useful! This piece is sturdy so it became useful.  Somehow my daughter ended up with out a dresser for her room and in desperate need of one. So this was washed and put into her room as a "dresser" much to her dismay!!

My daughter, being much like her mother, persisted to ask when we were going to design her room. I would tell her as soon as you decide how you want to decorate. She would come back with this and that but nothing that was really plausible. Then she and her Aunt got together and decided that pink and zebra was the way to go.  I thought this would be like all the others and just be a thought for the day but she stuck with it.  This is what color she choose. I'm not sure if she could have gotten a pinker PINK!!

Now I did as I was told at the store and cleaned the area of all debri and then I started spraying. To get the right coverage it took almost four cans of spray paint. I used the Krylon spraypaint. So far I'm pretty happy with it but it has scuffed in a few places so I will be going back and touching up and then spraying with a clear protective topcoat. (I'll let you know how it goes)

She then asked if we could paint her lamp to match. I looked at the sticker covered base and the drawn on shade and figured why not! It couldn't make it look any worse. So here it is. I think it turned out pretty good. The shade was interesting to spray since the paint would pick up the fibers but turned out good.

Now to get to the GONE WRONG part. I know that spraypaint  doesn't stay in one place after being sprayed so I put newspaper down so I could save my garage. Well I will now warn you that you should newspaper everything or put cardboard boxes up as a sheild becasue THIS is what it did to my garage!

Even the Cobwebs are PINK!

So please don't end up with a Pink garage. Use cardboard or newspaper and save yourself from having to explain how your great DIY project turned your garage pink!

DIY gone Pink

Has anyone ever had a DIY project turn bad?  Well this was just my latest DIY project that went a little to far. Tune in tomorrow for the story on how my garage turned PINK !

A Challenge

Am I worth it? I have had this thought many times.  I am also very sad to admit that I answered "No" a lot of the time.  But no longer will I allow myself to be so pitiful. I want to challenge everyone to say, "I am worth it!" whenever faced with a struggle. I will be saying it whenever I open the freezer door to get the ice cream out, or when my alarm goes off and I want just five more minutes(and we all know that turns into 15).  I am worth it and will let you know how my challenge goes during the week.  Please post your struggles and suggestions on how one overcomes and becomes "Worth It."

Shower Magic

My lovely pink shower
So we recently bought a house and my husband kindly asked: "Sweetheart since this is OUR house and we are no longer renting do you think you could keep it a little cleaner?"......... WHAT!!!
It is really not like my house is dirty. Cluttered, yes, but dirty NO!  Needless to say to appease my husband I went searching for something that would clean faster, last longer, and make it appear as if I had just cleaned it.
I have to say, raise your hands, hallelujah I have found it!

OK, I know you have probably seen the Dawn Soap and Vinegar shower cleaner. The post I saw stated that you use the blue name brand Dawn. You would place 1 cup of hot vinegar and 1 cup of Dawn soap in a spray bottle, shake slightly to blend , then spray your shower and wait an hour or so. Come back wipe it off and your done. Not so!! I followed the instruction and found myself  ankle deep in suds. Not to mention that it took another hour to wipe it down. It DID clean the hard water stains and other stuff off so I gave it another try.  I am not a name brand person so I buy whatever is on sale or cheaper. I ended up with a Great Value green apple soap I bought at Walmart for $1.68, white vinegar, and a bottle that had left over Kaboom in it.

Not wanting to give my feet another bubble bath I decreased the ratio to 1/2 cup of soap to 1 cup hot vinegar.  I shook  it slightly and then sprayed the shower.(I let my shower get just a little grosser then usual before cleaning so you could see how well it worked.) I only waited twenty minutes(the time it took to fold my two baskets of laundry) and then went back with a blue kitchen sponge and then hosed it down. If needed I would respray the really tough stuff again and wait another twenty but really the first spray got it clean. It even cleans the film off the doors! I believe it took me thirty minutes including the twenty minutes of waiting, start to finish. If that wasn't good enough I only do this monthly. Yes, that is only once a month. This not only saves me time but it only costs about .75 cents and I already use both items in the house. Nothing extra. Now about the husband, let's just say he's impressed that I'm keeping up my end of the deal!

Please feel free to comment on if it worked for you.  E-mail me with other ideas that you love.
